Unique crack propagation of double network hydrogels under high stretch

Double network (DN) gels, consisting of two contrasting interpenetrated polymer networks, exhibit large resistances to crack initiation and propagation. For practical applications, materials in highly stretched states are important. In this study, we investigated the growth behaviors DN gels by inducing seeds into these under various degrees tension. This examination enables analysis propagation for a wide range bulk energy release rate G. The power-law relationship between G velocity v was with different tensile behaviors. We found that brittle unnecking velocities changed from slow mode (quasi-stationary fracture) fast (dynamic an increase G, similar single gel; contrast, necking having higher than those only modes were observed once is above threshold. Real-time birefringence observation reveals damage zone around tip at slightly lower threshold, while hardly results indicate that, has barrier owing formation zone; overcome, excess accelerates therefore dynamic fracture.
